Jeep falls into a gorge on Gauchar-Sidhauli route in Chamoli district

Chamoli: Five persons were killed and eight injured when the jeep they were travelling plunged into a gorge on Gauchar-Sidhauli route in Chamoli district on Thursday night. While the condition of one of the injured is said to be stable, the other seven are still in a critical condition. The mishap occurred when residents of Majhkhola village in Chamoli district were on way home after attending a marriage function at Gairsan in the late night hours. Around 11pm on Thursday, the driver lost control of the wheel and the vehicle fell into the gorge.

On being informed, a police team along with locals and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel rushed to the spot and started rescue operation, which lasted till early hours of Friday morning.

The five deceased have been identified as Padam Singh (driver) (56), Narendra Singh Bisht (29), Dinesh Singh (28), Kumari Ravina (13) and Vikram Singh (24). The injured are Ritu Singh (14), Sapna (14), Manoj Singh (26), Monica (19), Latika (17), Deepa (18), Babita Devi (26) and Ashok Singh (24).

The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. Locals and sources said the overloading was likely the cause of the accident.
