The guest teachers in the state who have been protesting for the past 20 days have intensified their stir and gone on a relay hunger strike.

According to an order issued by the Uttarakhand high court, the guest teachers in the state can only be hired until March 2017 after which most of them will be left unemployed. Lalit Dangwal, president of the guest teachers’ association said, “The government has not done anything to meet our demands. Even the high court directed the government to ensure that some provision is made for us but till now there has been no decision from the government’s side.”

The guest teachers have been unemployed since their contract term ended in government schools on March 31, 2016, and are demanding reappointments on 6,214 posts.

Priyanka Verma, a protester said, “We have no money and we will be on the road if no concrete decision is taken about our future. Once the election period starts we will be forgotten.”
