Cloudburst damages buildings in Devprayag

Property damage was reported from Shanti Bazaar of Devprayag of Tehri district due to the rise in the Shanta River due to the cloudburst on the Dashrath mountain in New Tehri. As per reports, ITI’s three-storey building was completely demolished. More than ten shops along the Shanta River were washed away. A road and a culvert from Devprayag Nagar to the bus stand were completely destroyed. Due to the Corona curfew, the closure of shops, including the ITI, resulted in heavy loss of life was avoided.

Water suddenly surged in Shanta river, originating from the mountain of Dasharatha, in Devprayag on Tuesday evening. The mud and stones that came with huge amounts of water created havoc in Shanti Bazaar, causing the ITI’s three-storey building standing on the pillars of cement to be damaged. Dewan Singh, a security personnel present at the ITI building, somehow saved his life. Nearly ten shops, including computer centers, private banks, electricity shops were damaged due to the debris in the river.

On the other hand, the culvert on Shanta river, along with the road to the bus station, the shops of jewelers, clothes, sweets etc. were alsodamaged due to the heavy debris in the river. Shanta River joins the Bhagirathi River from Devprayag Bus Base via Shanti Bazaar. Initial estimates of heavy losses are being made in Shanti Bazar. The Devprayag Police Station is yet to report any casualties. If the corona curfew was not there, there could have been a large number of casualties in the city. Devprayag police station in-charge MS Rawat said that the police team has been deployed on the spot.

The Meteorological Department has issued an alert alert for heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand for 12 and 13 May. Apart from this, a yellow alert has been issued on May 11 and 14 in several hilly districts of the state. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rain, thunder and lightning is expected in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh district on May 12. Scattered rains may occur over Uttarkashi, Tehri, Dehradun, Nainital, Almora, Champawat and Pithoragarh.

In the plains, gusting winds will move at a speed of 30 to 40 km. On May 13, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarkashi, Pauri, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital and Pithoragarh districts. There may be hail at some places in Tehri, Dehradun, Pauri, Almora, Nainital and Champawat.
