Honolulu council to remove ‘Stairway to Heaven’

Honolulu officials are planning to destroy the popular site Haiku Stairs popularly known as ‘Stairway to Heaven’. They argue that this is a very ‘dangerous’ tourist site. Honolulu city council voted unanimously last Wednesday to remove the ‘stairway to heaven’.

In Honolulu in the US state of Hawaii, there is a step ladder of 3922 steps, which takes people 2400 feet above the Valley of Haiku. Hundreds of people arrive every year to climb this mountainous path, known as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ although it is illegal, but now plans are being made to remove these ‘Stairways to Heaven’.

It was built in 1942 by the US military to install an antenna, so that radio communication can be done from one side to the other. Later this antenna was taken over by the US Coast Guard. Even now a 2 lakh watt radio antenna can be seen here, due to which communication is possible over a long distance.

Although it is illegal to walk on it, hundreds of people come to climb the stairs. People arrive early in the morning to avoid the security guards. This area is quite attractive and people want to see the view of the beautiful mountains. Many tourists have said after visiting here that they will never forget this trip.

Earlier this staircase was made of wood, which was later made of concrete. Now people are demanding from the government to make walking on the stairs legal, but the government says that the maintenance of the stairs will cost a lot and it will not be financially beneficial.

Walking on these steps is illegal. Those who violate the rule are also fined $ 1,000, yet people do not obey.
