Glacier breaks on Kedarnath trekking route; watch video

On the way to Kedarnath, the yatra had to be halted due to the breaking of the glacier on Thursday. The Bhairav Glacier broke down on the trekking route of the yatra, blocking the way between Bhairav Gadera and Kuber Gadera. Hence the travel was halted. The administration has asked the pilgrims of Char Dham to stay put.

District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar has informed that the Kedarnath Dham Yatra route was closed for devotees last evening due to breaking of glacier between Bhairav Gadera and Kuber Gadera. Under the direction of District Magistrate Mayur Dixit, DDMA, SDRF, DDRF, NDRF, YMF and police personnel are working to remove snow from both the glaciers to smoothen the yatra route. The work of snow removal from Bhairon Glacier has been completed, while the work of snow removal is being done on Kuber Glacier. Due to the breaking of the glacier again, the yatra route is completely closed for movement.

District Magistrate Mayur Dixit has appealed to the pilgrims traveling to Kedarnath Dham on foot not to go on the journey to Kedarnath until the travel route is completely smooth, be safe at the place where they are. Those who want to have darshan by air service can visit Kedarnath Dham through heli service.

Apart from Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir received snowfall along with rain at some places. The Meteorological Department has predicted the formation of a cyclone in the southeast of the Bay of Bengal by May 9. DG Mrityunjay Mohapatra of the Central Meteorological Department said that on May 6, a low pressure area is forming in the Bay of Bengal. After this there are indications of cyclone formation.
