Indigenous navigation system ‘NavIC’ will ensure continuity of services

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) completed preparations to launch the navigation satellite ‘NavIC’ from the Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). Scientists on Sunday, started the 27.5-hour countdown for the satellite which was launched on Monday. NavIC (India’s indigenous navigation system) will ensure continuity of services.

The satellite, similar to a GPS, will provide real-time position and timing services over an area of about 1,500 km around India and the mainland. The navigator is designed such that the signal can provide a user position of better than 20 meters and a timing accuracy of better than 50 nanoseconds.

It is used in terrestrial, air and maritime transport, location-based services, personal mobility, resource monitoring, surveying and geodesy, scientific research, time dissemination and life safety alert dissemination. The mission on Monday is the sixth operational flight of GSLV with the indigenous cryogenic stage. According to ISRO, the mission life of NVS-01 is expected to be more than 12 years.
