Diamond League Finals 2023: Defending Champion Neeraj Chopra expected to face tough competition from Jacob and Anderson

Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra will defend his title in the Diamond League 2023 final late tonight. The Diamond League 2023 final will be played in Eugene city of America. Neeraj’s match will take place today at 1:50 am IST.

Neeraj qualified for the finals by finishing second with a best score of 85.71 meters in the 11th meet of the league in Zurich city of Switzerland. Chopra is the current Diamond League Men’s Javelin Throw champion, he won this trophy in 2022.

Murali Sreeshankar in men’s long jump and Avinash Sable in 3000 meter steeplechase also qualified for the finals of their respective events. According to media reports, both the players decided to withdraw from the Eugene competition to focus on the Asian Games to be held in China from September 23.

First Indian athlete to win medal in Olympics

Neeraj became the first Indian athlete to win both Olympic and World Championship gold simultaneously. He won gold in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

What is Diamond League?

The Diamond League is an athletics (track and field) tournament that consists of 16 athletics events (men’s and women’s). It is organized every year in different cities of the world.

The Diamond League Athletics Series is held annually from May to September and concludes the season with the Diamond League Finals. Usually the number of competitions in a Diamond League season is 14, including the final, but sometimes this number changes.

In every event, the top-8 players get points, the first-place player gets 8 points and the 8th-ranked player gets one point. After 13 events, the points of all the players are counted. Players who finish in the top-10 positions get a place in the Diamond League finals. In this, the winning player gets the Diamond League winner’s trophy and cash prize.
