Ace shooter Jaspal Rana passed away aged 49
Former Asiad Gold Medalist Shooter Jaspal Rana passed away today. He was hospitalized and undergoing treatment. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) confirmed his death. He had a stent inserted after experiencing chest discomfort, which later led to a second attack. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Minister Rajnath Singh expressed condolences.
Jaspal, a resident of Chilamu village in Tehri district, worked as a high-performance coach for India’s pistol shooters. He felt unwell while returning to India from the ISSF World Cup in Munich. Jaspal Rana, who stunned the world by setting a world record at the age of 18, consistently held India’s flag high in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
Along with sports, he also entered politics. He contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from the Tehri Garhwal parliamentary constituency on a BJP ticket, but lost. He became the star campaigner of Congress during the 2012 assembly elections.
