One dead in cloudburst in Pithoragarh, Chamoli

An elderly man was killed and four injured in cloudburst in Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts in the early hours of Saturday. More than 100 homes, hotels and shops came in the grip of the debris from the cloudburst. 40 to 50 residential buildings and six cowsheds were damaged. The SDRF team rescued people and cattle buried under the debris. Revenue department teams are assessing the damage. About one and a half thousand devotees are stranded at various stops due to the Badrinath road being blocked.

In Timtia area Munsiyari tehsil of Pithoragarh district in Kumaon division, a cloudburst led to the demolition of a residential house, killing 60-year-old Ramsingh living in it. His wife Dhani Devi was injured in the incident. Debris and water entered more than three dozen homes in the area. More than a dozen animals were buried in the rubble. A Max Jeep and two motorcycles have been swept away by the Bujhgad river overflow.

Around three dozen houses have been damaged and around the same number of houses have come under threat. Nearly seven hundred meters of the Thal-Munsiyari road caved into the river. On the other hand, excessive rainfall in the Sukshadag village of Kapkot in Bageshwar district led to subsidence. People ran away from homes and moved to safer places. Here 12 houses have come under threat. In view of the rise of Saryu river here, the administration is monitoring the buses on the banks of the river. Tanakpur-Champawat highway remained closed for two hours due to debris. There was fog cover in Nainital since morning.

Heavy rains in Govindghat caused havoc in the early hours 20 km from Joshimath on Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district. After the cloudburst, debris entered Gobindghat with water and mud entering Gothiyama Gadera, Tuppani Gadera and Karuna Gadera. More than 40 vehicles parked in the parking lot of Govindghat were buried under the debris.

80 parts of Badrinath Highway have also been demolished. Due to this, passengers going to Badrinath Dham and Hemkund have been stopped at safe places. Both roads and 10 shops leading to the gurdwara were also damaged by the debris. Due to the disaster, electric poles and water lines have also been broken in Govindghat. There are problems for drinking water in Govindghat.
